This year, your child will be sitting their GCSE Numeracy/Mathematics exams. To be awarded with this GCSE, your child will need to sit a non-calculator and a calculator exam in the summer.
In order to support your child prepare for these exams throughout the year, your child must purchase a scientific calculator and bring it along to every Mathematics lesson. There are differences in the way different scientific calculators work. It is therefore important that your child is able to practice using their own calculator and develop an understanding of how it works throughout the year.
Below are some examples of where pupils can purchase scientific calculators from. We recommend pupils purchase CASIO calculators because they tend to have slightly better functionality compared to other scientific calculators. You can purchase calculators from Amazon or supermarkets.
It will be compulsory for all Key Stage 4 pupils to bring scientific calculators to their lessons from Monday 2nd October.
In particular, if your child does not have a scientific calculator in the exams at the end of the year, your child may only have access to a basic calculator, meaning they will not have all of the functions they need to achieve highly in the exam.
Please speak to myself or your child’s form tutor if you have any questions/concerns regarding purchasing a scientific calculator for your child. We would be more than happy to support as much as we can.
