Welcome to Cathays High School

Dear parents, guardians and other visitors to our website,

Cathays High is an 11-19 mixed comprehensive school serving the heart of Cardiff.

We are a successful school in many different ways. Firstly, our pupils achieve very strong academic outcomes in their GCSE and A-Levels. These far exceed their predicted results and therefore our teachers and support staff add value to all the young people who come through our gates each day. Secondly, our young people enjoy great accomplishments in sporting and cultural fields because of the many opportunities provided for all at the school and thirdly, Cathays High students are successful because they are supported to develop into well-rounded young adults with an understanding of the world around them.

In our most recent inspection, we achieved good judgements with many features of the school seen as being exceptionally strong. Estyn and the Central South Consortium have also recognised the highly effective provision that the school has put in place to ensure that all children, including those from the most disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds, achieve very strong outcomes at the school.

Students of all abilities attend the school and we benefit from parental choice with around 60% of our students coming from outside the designated primary school catchment area. We now have 240 students that enter Year 7 each year and the vast majority continue with their education post-16. This gives us a thriving and lively sixth-form. Many of our young people progress to the most prestigious Higher Education establishments including Oxbridge and the Russell Group universities.

Major investments in computer technology and our sports facilities on the school site, at Maindy Stadium and Heath Park have extended provision and opportunities available for our students and the local community.

Cathays High benefits from a hard-working, well-qualified and dedicated team of teachers and support staff. We are proud to be a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural school and we are fortunate to have pleasant, conscientious students and very supportive parents. This makes for a strong and cohesive learning community.

As a school we aspire to high standards from our students in all that they do. We aim to ensure that students are happy and safe as they work towards their future academic and personal goals and ambitions. We are a truly inclusive school and value all of our members equally, regardless of gender, colour, creed, ability, class, age or status.

The leadership team, and indeed all of our staff, are proud of the young people that live and work as part of our community. We are constantly striving to evaluate and improve the provision and standards of achievement of these young people to ensure they have the very best life chances possible. We take every opportunity to promote the importance of attendance and hard work as being vital ingredients for success in school and beyond. Cathays High endeavours to provide a well-rounded curriculum and extracurricular programme to ensure we help to develop productive, proactive and prepared citizens for the 21st Century.

There is always a warm welcome for you to visit us during the working day when we will be happy to answer any questions you have. Please contact us to make an appointment.
